Hermanus Fynbos Garden
A naturalistic fynbos retreat
Set on the windy western shores of the Walker Bay, in Hermanus, there is not much that withstands the wind other than the local fynbos vegetation. Thus, our client gave us a very simple, yet exciting brief: they wanted a fynbos garden and no lawn! This project was right up our alley, and we could not wait to get stuck into it. A fynbos planting palette was also the best solution regarding the geological composition of the site, which was predominantly rock.
After assessing the site, we also discovered that rainwater runoff would flow naturally towards the house. To counteract this, we constructed a rocky channel from rock we salvaged from the site.
The budget allowed for us to bring in four mature trees that would screen the patio and front door, which both face onto the road. We connected the outdoor spaces by placing stepping stones. The selected fynbos would, over time, become large enough to create a dense screen around the property.
